Hi friends!
First off, thank you so much for your thoughtful comments on last monthās newsletter. Itās encouraging to see that others know the forever-student syndrome, and I was touched to see the silver linings yāall pointed out ā namely, that even unfinished classes still provide value and help you be a better you. š
As for my latest big-ticket course purchase, Iām learning a lot from Leverage Your Art with Stacie Bloomfield! Iām watching modules as they are released, and then rewatching them accompanied by the massive workbook that the Gingiber team sent out to all of this seasonās students.
It was while hiding in my partnerās room, with loud construction going on at our balcony (ie my side of the apartmentā¦Iāve had to vacate my room at 7:30 AM for the past week š„²), noise-cancelling earbuds in, rewatching Module 2 on āBuilding Your Brandā that it dawned on me:
āStreaacā is a derivative of my name.
If ever in the future thereās an opportunity to sell my brand, Iād have to sell off my name as well.
Likewise, itād be kind of awkward if ever I assemble a team to assist in my daily operations that they work for someone elseās name.
Sure, thereās plenty of existing brands that are named after the founder, but Stacie made sure to point out the nuances of having a brand named after you. (She then explained her process and reasoning for using āGingiberā as her brand rather than her name.)
So I put this learning into practice, wrote out some ideas, and a brand has been born!
Introducing: Star Gremlin Studio!
Let me share the thought process behind this brand name:
Star - my name is Greek and Latin for āstar-maidenā or āstarry night.ā Allegedly, itās another name for the constellation Virgo (even though Iām a Leo hehe). Living in SoCal, Iāve had Latinx classmates point out that my name is not too far from āEstrella,ā which is the Spanish word for āstar.ā
Gremlin - according to my boyfriend, I have gremlin-like behaviors? Iām not out for malicious intent! But I do revel in innocuous tricks and like to roam around my living space like a (cute) troll. It wasnāt until recently an acquaintance called me a gremlin INDEPENDENTLY (he has never met my bf) that I realizedā¦I kind of am a gremlin? In an Anya Forger kind of way:
Studio - technically, this is simply a tagline to clarify what the heck āStar Gremlinā is. Studio is a word strongly associated with art, so hopefully, when people come across the 3-word combo they can quickly figure out this is an art brand.
Staking claim online
As of this writing, streaac.com is private only to me while I convert it to Star Gremlin Studio HQ. Squarespace isnāt the cheapest option for website hosting, so converting all the content and URLs is the more financially sound option at this time (You can make unlimited websites with one Squarespace account, but each website is billed separately š±).
I plan to launch the website officially in July! As a treat, youāll be the first to know when things are up and ready. šāØ
What will become of Streaac?
Iām keeping the name, the domain, and the YouTube channel! But now that Iām operating under two names, this will allow me a clearer division of content.
Streaac will be the name I use for fanart and personal work. From a business standpoint, I believe these works have limited leverage, as they are very personal, therefore could only capture a small buyer base; nonetheless, having this outlet is valuable to me. In other words, Iāll be sharing autobio comics and video game fanart as Streaac.
Star Gremlin Studio will showcase original illustrations, surface designs, and other work meant to be marketable and high leverage. Weāre talking brand collabs, licensing, wholesale, and other means of professional income. SGS is for art I can make once and use infinitely because it has wider appeal and is my intellectual property.
Artwork Update
As part of Leverage Your Art, Iāve audited my surface design collections and created a schedule to stick to for my short-term goal. My goal is to have an easily updatable pdf portfolio file, and the SGS website ready by June 24th.
This first iteration of my portfolio will include:
Gentle Giant (Iāve since simplified some designs to make them more versatile)
Halloween collection (angels and witches)
NEW hydrangea collection
and Juneās main project: fruits!
Share your thoughts!
My vision for Star Gremlin is for it to be the umbrella that shelters standalone illustrations and comics with mass appeal and relatability. And, as youāve already seen in previous newsletters, Iām making patterns to be used for various surfaces ā fabric, dishware, tea towels, tech accessories, apparel, stationery, and more. My question to you this month is:
š§What motifs, concepts, and color combos do you personally gravitate towards? What interests do you have that you would consider mainstream, and what interests do you have that are better described as ānicheā?
Your opinion matters to me!
I expect Star Gremlin will evolve as the brand evolves, but I think itād be exciting to start off strong with a (literal) brand story and the visual assets to match.
Thatās why Iād like to send you the newsletter a little earlier in the month next month, to share with you the āØloreāØ of the delightful character (yes, character!) that is Star Gremlin. With the lore in mind, Iād love your feedback on logo and brand colors, and any thoughts on expanding the lore as well.
See you in June!
Omg, congrats on the new brand! For some reason, I thought you would be establishing an animation studio, but I guess my definition of "studio" is presently limited. But patterns as design for stuff? That's cool and unexpected, but also makes sense.
Haha, would like to see your "gremlin" behaviour xD
PLUS, I love the mascot and logo you posted. It's cute. Just a thought, but, aybe it's because red is something that I found to be emphasized on your platforms, idk, but I think a bit more red on your logo (or even just the font color) would really make it you. Idk if it's just me, but that's what I observed hehe. But I do love it already!
Taking the opportunity to answer one of your "question of the month", given previous experiences, I find myself gravitating on flower designs, given that it's spring (or was spring since it's June already). Another reason for this was how I found myself to be more appreciative towards flowers, especially when my mom took a long time picturing every one of them, when we were in a garden, haha!
Another thing, I also like the color combos of white, yellow, and blue. I may not be knowledgeable in color theory, and I personally suck in color theory, but these three colors have been stuck with me recently, especially with my sudden liking of clouds and the sky.
That's that for now. I'd like to congratulate on your brand again, and I support! Looking forward for it's growth!
God Bless, Ate Strea! <3
First off, congratulations on the epiphany! Makes a lot of sense and something I never thought of.
Sticking with square space because of historical data? Considered any other options? I use Wix for work but I am not sure the immediate $$ difference. I used square space in the ALT days and I didnāt like it at all. I also didnāt belong there and had no idea what I was doing. š Maybe changed since that was a decade ago š± but yeah. Might be worth researching.
I find my tastes have shifted as Iāve gotten older, and what I spend money on, I think thatās for the best. I appreciate looking at art most of all, but Iām at that stage where something I really resonate with will bring me to tears (looking at you, Jed Henry). If itās not something to stick on the wall, I definitely appreciate the subtle and humorous. Iāve invested in Calamity Ware, clothing from Em & Sprout, a scarf from Cyberoptix, and a significant number of enamel pins that are either reflective of my gaming/anime fandoms, tea habit, cat lady status, or anything else that jumps out at me.
Iāve found Iām also more curious about what I can use for home accents, like wallpaper, pillow cases, throw blankets, etc. I want to personalize while also being practical. I still lean heavily into the whole minimalist thing, and I find that one or two āluxuryā items that are going to last me forever, and tug at my heart and soul, make it to the front of the brain.
